Welcome to My Creative Oasis: A Tour of My Hand-Built Outdoor Studio for Botanical Printing

If you're passionate about art, nature, and creating beautiful prints, then you're in for a treat! I’m excited to share a tour of my outdoor botanical printing studio—a serene, hand-built space crafted with love by my husband. It’s a true creative oasis, designed specifically for my botanical art process, and every area has its purpose. Join me as I walk you through each section of my studio and give you a glimpse of the inspiration behind every detail.

Why Botanical Printing?

Botanical printing is a process that uses natural materials like leaves, flowers, and stems to create beautiful, unique patterns on paper or fabric. It's a deeply rewarding art form that connects me to nature and allows me to capture the beauty of plants in a way that feels both organic and timeless. I knew that to fully immerse myself in this craft, I needed a space that was just as unique as the art I create.

The Journey to Creating My Outdoor Studio

Like many artists, I dreamed of having a dedicated space where I could work, experiment, and find inspiration in the natural surroundings. But I wanted this studio to feel special—something different from a traditional indoor setup. That’s where my husband came in! With his skill and a lot of love, he built this studio from scratch. Now, it’s not only functional but also holds sentimental value, making it the perfect sanctuary for my botanical printing journey.

A Tour of Each Area in My Studio

Every corner of my studio is designed with intention. Here’s a breakdown of the spaces within my creative oasis and how I use each one:

  • Mixing Station & Apothecary
This is where the magic begins! I mix natural pigments, experiment with colors, and prepare botanical materials. The mixing station serves as the foundation of each project, and working in an outdoor setting lets me use water and other natural elements freely without worrying about spills or messes. Plus, the fresh air enhances my creativity and focus.

  • Pressing and Rolling Table
Botanical printing often involves pressing materials onto surfaces to create lasting impressions. My pressing station is set up with a space below to store essential materials and tools, and a convenient rack to keep rollers within easy reach, making it simple to press designs with precision.

  • Cooking Station
This is where I prepare raw materials, removing any residual chemicals and steaming fabrics to set botanical prints. Here, I also create tannins from fresh plants, which add beautiful background tones to my prints and allow me to naturally dye fabrics. It’s a transformative process that brings out the vibrant colors of nature.

  • Water Station
At the water station, I mordant fabrics to prepare them for printing. I also keep freshly made tannin for tannin blankets and use this area to dip, rinse, and fix my fabrics. At the end of the day, it’s also where I wash everything up, keeping the studio ready for the next creative session.

  • Relaxation Nook
After hours of focused work, taking a breather is essential. My relaxation nook, complete with a charming vintage rocker, is my space to unwind, brainstorm ideas, jot down notes, or simply enjoy the surrounding beauty of nature. It’s a perfect spot to recharge and reflect before diving into my next project.

Why I Love Working in My Outdoor Studio

There’s something magical about working outside, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of nature. My studio is more than just a workspace; it’s a sanctuary that fuels my creativity and allows me to connect deeply with the natural world. Being able to work in an environment that’s tailored to my art form makes every project feel special, and I believe it shows in the final pieces.

Final Thoughts

Creating a dedicated studio space has been a game-changer for my botanical printing journey. Not only does it help me stay organized and inspired, but it also gives me a peaceful place to create, surrounded by the natural world.
